Amahoro is working on a new project of rearing Boer goats on our Tangawizi goats’ Farm. Starting with a small number of five, we are hoping to raise a big herd in the nearby future.
The project is named after Ginger Nickel, who was part of the ACCT group that visited Uganda in August of 2016. Tangawizi means ginger in Luganda. Ginger has experience raising goats, and she founded this project and helped purchase the goats.
The Boer goat is a breed of goat that was developed in South Africa. They were selected for meat rather than milk production. The Boer goat has a fast growth rate and excellent meat qualities, making it one of the most popular breeds of meat goat in the world. Boer goats are disease resistance and adapt well to hot, dry climates. They are also noted for being docile, and having high fertility rates.
We look forward to building this herd. Eventually Amahoro hopes to be able to use the goats in order to become more self-sustainable.
